1972 Sammy Davis Jr. – Portrait Of Sammy Davis Jr.

MGM Records. SC 4852.

Buoyed by the surprise success of The Candy Man single, Davis and Don Costa were rushed back into the recording studio in June of 1972 to produce what was hoped to be a best selling album. In the event it was a forlorn hope as the album made little noise but it does represent the best of Sammy’s studio performances in the post-Reprise years.

The set contains his first performance of Mr Bojangles, which would become his latter day theme song, and some other excellent mid-tempo versions of contemporary easy listening standards… the best of which are Sweet Gingerbread Man and Love Is All Around, the Sonny Curtis penned theme tune for the Mary Tyler Moore TV series.
